The Sacred Valley of the Incas, or Urubamba Valley, is a valley in the Andes of Peru north of Cusco, stretching from Pisac to Ollantaytambo along the Urubamba River. Its fertile, irrigated land supported the Chanapata, Qotacalla and Killke cultures in succession before the valley was slowly absorbed into the Inca Empire between 1000 and 1400. It remains a major tourist destination today, with Machu Picchu among its best known archaeological sites.
