A pseudo-atoll is an island that partially or completely encircles a lagoon in the manner of a true atoll, but differs from an atoll according to several authorities in how it forms. Several sources consider pseudo-atoll a preferable term to the alternative near-atoll, though a rigorous definition of pseudo-atoll is still needed before the term can be fully accepted as a general one.
