The Paraíba Valley is a landform encompassing the Paraíba Valley Metropolitan Region and Northern Coast in the state of Sao Paulo and the Sul-Fluminense Region in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an area that concentrates a considerable portion of the Brazilian economy. It takes its name from the Paraíba do Sul river basin, since the river runs from Sao Paulo along almost the entire length of Rio de Janeiro state and a small southern part of Minas Gerais, though in the strict sense the name properly refers only to the region with this particular geographical feature rather than to any official IBGE administrative region.
