The Onsernone Valley is one of the principal valleys of the Locarno District in the Swiss canton of Ticino, covering about 11.5 square miles and named for the Onsernone River, called the Isorno in Switzerland. It lies in western Ticino, bordered by Valle Maggia and Valle Verzasca to the east, Valle di Vergeletto to the north, Centovalli to the south, and the Ossola Valley of Italy to the west, reachable by a single road in and out. Its population peaked in the 19th century when rye straw processing was a major local industry, and in 2018 residents rejected a national park proposal over fears that regulation and mass tourism would disrupt the laid back character of the valley.
