The Limmat Valley lies in the Swiss cantons of Zürich and Aargau, named for the 35-kilometer Limmat River, which flows out of Lake Zürich and runs northwest until it joins the Aare northeast of Brugg, a confluence known as the Wasserschloss just before the Aare meets the Rhine. The valley has become one of Switzerland's most heavily populated regions because of its closeness to Zürich and its strong transport links, and the name Limmattal is now also used for various regional institutions, including a hospital, a railway classification yard, a newspaper and a gymnasium serving the area.
