Jonastal is a valley in the Ilm-Kreis district of Germany, between the towns of Crawinkel and Arnstadt and near Ohrdruf. During the final years of the Second World War it was the site of military construction under the National Socialist regime: thousands of prisoners from the Buchenwald concentration camp, under the command of SS General Hans Kammler, were forced to dig twenty-five tunnels into the surrounding mountain under strict secrecy. The site was never completed, and construction was abandoned before the war ended.
