Ischigualasto Provincial Park, also known as Valle de la Luna, is a 60,370 hectare protected area in San Juan Province in northwestern Argentina, established in 1971 and bordering Talampaya National Park across the boundary with La Rioja Province. Its rock records a Late Triassic floodplain, roughly 231 to 226 million years old, laid down by rivers on a volcanically active plain under seasonal rains, and wind and water have since eroded the sedimentary layers into striking shapes such as The Submarine, The Sphinx and The Mushroom that gave the park its Valley of the Moon nickname.
