Hoga Kusten, the High Coast, lies along the Gulf of Bothnia in Vasternorrland County, in the Angermanland province of northeastern Sweden, a landscape of joint valleys cut into uplifted remnants of the ancient Sub-Cambrian peneplain, with terrain reaching up to 250 meters in elevation along its coastal trail. The land here has recorded the highest known postglacial isostatic rebound on Earth: after the last ice sheet retreated roughly 9,600 years ago, ground that had been compacted under the weight of the ice began rising rapidly, and the coast has since climbed about 300 meters in total, with the uplift continuing today at around 8 millimeters a year. Former shorelines stranded well above current sea level remain visible across the region as physical evidence of that ongoing rise, and the area's isolated waters preserve relict fish species left behind from the last glaciation, including the fourhorn sculpin.
