The Herefordshire Lagerstatte is a Silurian fossil deposit in Herefordshire, England, roughly four hundred and thirty million years old, in which marine animals were entombed within a layer of volcanic ash and preserved as three dimensional mineral casts inside carbonate nodules, a preservation style unusual enough that specimens are studied by grinding away thin layers and digitally reconstructing the fossil rather than by physical extraction. The deposit has yielded numerous previously unknown arthropods and other invertebrates.
