Heligoland is a small archipelago in the North Sea about 69 kilometers off the German coast. It comprises two parts, a populated triangular main island with distinctive red Bunter sandstone cliffs, and the smaller Dune island to the east, which is now home to an airfield. The islands are administratively part of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein.
