Hallingdal is a valley and traditional district in Buskerud county in eastern Norway, running from Gulsvik on Lake Kroderen toward the border with Hordaland and Sogn og Fjordane, and encompassing the municipalities of Fla, Nes, Gol, Hemsedal, Al and Hol. The valley is V-shaped and flanked by a relatively flat mountain plateau standing 700 to 1,100 meters above sea level, with the Hallingdalselva river draining the valley from its source on the Hardangervidda plateau eastward and then south. Covering about 5,830 square kilometers with roughly 20,500 residents as of 2014, Hallingdal is one of the major valleys of eastern Norway and is known for its rosemaling folk painting, folk music and traditional dance.
