Eskdale (Scotland)

Eskdale is a glen and former lordship in the county of Dumfriesshire in southwestern Scotland, known in Scottish Gaelic as Eisgeadal. The River Esk runs through it before emptying into the Solway Firth, and the valley includes the high moorland of Eskdale Moor. It was historically held by the Earls of Douglas as a feudal lordship until their title was forfeited in 1455, and its climate can be severe, a documented 1620 spell of 13 consecutive snow days left only 35 sheep alive from a flock of 20,000.
