The Dearne Valley is an area of South Yorkshire, England, along the River Dearne, taking in the towns of Wombwell, Wath-upon-Dearne, Swinton, Conisbrough and Mexborough along with numerous surrounding villages. It became a regeneration area in 1995 after suffering the sudden decline of its deep coal mining industry in the 1980s, and by the 2011 census the wider Barnsley/Dearne Valley built-up area recorded a population of 223,281.
