Cynon Valley is a valley in south Wales named for the River Cynon, lying between the Rhondda and Merthyr valleys, with Aberdare in its northern section and Mountain Ash in the south. It was a major coal mining area, and its industrial mining heritage shaped the valley development for generations. From 1974 to 1996 the valley was itself a local government district and borough before being absorbed into the unitary authority of Rhondda Cynon Taf; at the 2001 census the valley had a population of about 63,512, of whom 12.1 percent spoke Welsh.
