The Chitwan Valley is an Inner Terai valley in southern Nepal, spanning the districts of Makwanpur, Chitwan and Nawalpur and forming part of the Terai-Duar savanna and grasslands ecoregion. It runs about 150 kilometers long and 30 to 48 kilometers wide, drained by the East Rapti River, which rises in the Mahabharat Range near Hetauda and flows west through the valley, forming the eastern boundary of Chitwan National Park for about 70 kilometers before joining the Narayani River, the Nepali name for the Gandaki, a tributary of the Ganges. Hetauda, Ratnanagar, Narayangarh and Bharatpur are its main towns.
