The Chemnitz Petrified Forest is a fossil deposit beneath the city of Chemnitz in Saxony, Germany, in which an entire Early Permian forest, roughly two hundred and ninety million years old, was rapidly buried and silicified by ash and mudflows from nearby volcanic activity, preserving tree trunks upright in their original growth position along with the surrounding understory vegetation. Excavated fossils are displayed at a museum built around remains uncovered during construction in the city center.
