The Bazaruto Archipelago is a group of six islands, Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangue among them, off Mozambique's Inhambane Province near the mainland town of Vilankulo. Most of the islands were built from sand carried down by the Save River before the river shifted its course, leaving sandy, shifting landforms, and Santa Carolina is the exception, a true rock island of deeper geological composition.
