The Aran Islands are a group of three islands, Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer, at the mouth of Galway Bay off the west coast of Ireland, covering about 46 square kilometers with a 2022 population of 1,347. The islands lie in County Galway and are part of the Gaeltacht, with Irish spoken widely, and carry significant Bronze and Iron Age remains including the ancient fort Dun Aonghasa. They are built from karst limestone laid down as sediment in a tropical sea roughly 350 million years ago, during the Visean age of the Lower Carboniferous. Shaped further by glaciation and solution weathering, the islands form one of the finest examples of a glacio karst landscape in the world.
