The second era of the Proterozoic eon, spanning 1.6 billion to 1 billion years ago, and the first era of Earth's history for which a fairly definitive geological record survives. It saw the breakup of the supercontinent Columbia, the assembly of the succeeding supercontinent Rodinia, and, in its rock record, some of the earliest evidence for sexual reproduction and multicellular organisms.
