The first and longest of the Archean eon's four eras, spanning from the start of the Archean about 4 billion years ago to about 3.6 billion years ago. It is defined chronometrically rather than by a physical stratotype, and it covers the interval in which some of Earth's oldest surviving continental crust formed, including gneiss terrains in Canada and Greenland.
