The study of modern sediments such as sand, silt and clay, and of the processes that form, transport, deposit and finally alter them. Sedimentary rocks cover up to three quarters of Earth's surface, record much of its history and harbor the fossil record, and the discipline works by comparison: a modern sand dune set beside an ancient aeolian sandstone tells a geologist how the old rock formed.
