South Island (Kenya)

Volcanic Formations

South Island, also called Hohnel Island, is a fissure-formed volcanic island in Lake Turkana, Kenya, and the largest of the lake's three other major islands. The volcano was found erupting in 1888 by the Hungarian explorer Count Samuel Teleki, who led the first European expedition into the region. The island lies within the Lake Turkana National Parks, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This entity documents South Island specifically as a geological formation, a fissure-formed volcanic island first recorded erupting during Teleki's 1888 expedition; the entity name carries the Kenya qualifier this atlas uses to distinguish it from New Zealand's South Island, a place of the same short name with no relation to this volcanic island.
