Fingal's Cave

Volcanic Formations

Fingal's Cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, formed entirely from hexagonally jointed basalt columns of the same Paleogene lava flow that produced the Giant's Causeway across the North Channel. Its interior is a natural cathedral-like chamber roughly 20 meters high and 75 meters deep, carved by wave action along the jointed rock, and its Gaelic name, Uamh-Binn, means "cave of melody," describing the sound of waves echoing off the columned walls. The cave inspired Felix Mendelssohn's overture "The Hebrides," and it shares its formation with the Giant's Causeway as evidence that the two sites were once part of the same continuous lava field before the widening of the Atlantic Ocean separated them.

FAQs

Why are the rock walls of Fingal's Cave made of six-sided columns?

The columns formed when lava flows cooled and were put under pressure.

The cave is embedded in symmetrical, hexagonally jointed basalt columns. Britannica explains that these columns were formed from lava flows by cooling and pressure, so the regular six-sided pattern is a product of how the lava solidified. The cave lies on the island of Staffa in the Inner Hebrides of western Scotland.

Is Fingal's Cave related to the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland?

They share geological origins and may once have been joined by one lava flow.

Yes. Britannica states that Fingal's Cave shares its geological origins with the Giant's Causeway of Northern Ireland, and that the cave may once have been connected to the causeway by the same massive lava flow.
