Mayon Volcano rises in Albay Province in the Bicol Region of Luzon, Philippines, reaching an elevation of about 2,463 meters. It is an active stratovolcano renowned for its near-perfect symmetrical cone, built up through repeated layering of andesitic and basaltic lava flows, ash and pyroclastic material. Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines, with more than fifty recorded eruptions since 1616. Its most catastrophic eruption, in February 1814, buried the town of Cagsawa and killed over a thousand people, leaving only the belfry of its church, the Cagsawa Ruins, protruding from the ash. The volcano has continued to erupt regularly into the twenty-first century, including major activity in 2018 and again in 2023, each prompting large-scale evacuations of surrounding communities. This entity documents Mayon Volcano specifically as a geological formation, an active stratovolcano famed for its symmetrical cone and among the most frequently erupting volcanoes on Earth.
