Oceanographer

The scientists whose primary documented field is the physical, chemical or biological study of the ocean: Matthew Fontaine Maury, Henry Stommel, Walter Munk, Jacques Cousteau, Sylvia Earle, Robert Ballard and Marie Tharp among them. Belongs here: a scientist whose primary contribution is ocean circulation, seafloor mapping or exploration, or marine geophysics where oceanography is the documented primary identity, such as Bruce Heezen and Maurice Ewing, both Lamont-Doherty founders known first as oceanographers despite a Geologist or Geophysicist co-label. Does not belong here: a scientist whose primary field is atmospheric or climate science even where their work also touches the ocean, held under Meteorologist or Climatologist instead.
