Minerals composed of a metal cation bonded to oxygen, following the Nickel-Strunz oxide and hydroxide class. Includes corundum, an aluminium oxide, and the two iron oxides magnetite and hematite, both principal ore minerals of banded iron formations. Belongs here: any mineral whose defining bond is a metal-oxygen structure with no complex anion group such as carbonate, sulfate or phosphate standing between the metal and the oxygen. Does not belong here: a carbonate mineral such as calcite, whose oxygen sits inside a carbonate ion rather than bonded straight to the metal.
