Minerals in which a metal cation bonds to a halogen anion, chlorine, fluorine, bromine or iodine, following the Nickel-Strunz halide class. Includes halite, sodium chloride, and fluorite, calcium fluoride, both of which commonly form in evaporite or hydrothermal-vein settings. Belongs here: any mineral whose defining anion is a halogen. Does not belong here: a sulfate mineral such as gypsum that commonly occurs alongside halides in the same evaporite deposit but bonds to a sulfate ion rather than a halogen.
