William Hallowes Miller

William Hallowes Miller was a Welsh mineralogist and crystallographer, born in 1801 in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire, and died in 1880 in Cambridge, England. His 1839 Treatise on Crystallography introduced what became known as Miller indices, a notation still used to describe the orientation of crystal faces and planes, laying foundations for modern crystallography; the mineral millerite was later named in his honor. He also played a significant role in reforming British parliamentary standards of length and weight after fire destroyed the originals in 1834.
