William Ferrel was an American meteorologist, born in 1817 in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, and died in 1891 in Wyandotte County, Kansas. He developed a detailed theory of mid-latitude atmospheric circulation, improving on Hadley's earlier account by recognizing the role of the Coriolis effect, and the resulting circulation cell bears his name as the Ferrel cell. He also studied how the sun and moon affect ocean tides and Earth's rotation, and built a machine to predict tidal maxima and minima.
