Walter Alvarez is an American professor in the Earth and Planetary Science department at the University of California, Berkeley. Working with his father, the Nobel-laureate physicist Luis Alvarez, he was a lead researcher on the hypothesis that an asteroid impact caused the extinction of the dinosaurs, a theory built on their discovery of an iridium-rich layer at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary.
