Wallace Smith Broecker was an American geochemist who held the Newberry professorship in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University and was a scientist at Columbia's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. He developed the idea of a global ocean conveyor belt linking the circulation of the world's oceans and made major contributions to the science of the carbon cycle and to the use of chemical tracers and isotope dating in oceanography, and he is credited with popularizing the term global warming.
