Verner Edward Suomi was an American meteorologist, born in 1915 in Eveleth, Minnesota, and died in 1995 in Madison, Wisconsin, widely known as the father of satellite meteorology. An early faculty member of the University of Wisconsin-Madison meteorology department from 1948, he conducted the first meteorological experiment carried on a satellite, analyzing Earth's radiative energy balance from the Explorer VII mission in 1959. In 1965, with Robert Parent, he founded the Space Science and Engineering Center at Wisconsin, which went on to design the first satellite instrument to provide continuous weather imagery from geostationary orbit.
