Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin was an American geologist and educator, born in 1843 in Mattoon, Illinois, and died in 1928 in Chicago. He founded the Journal of Geology in 1893 and developed terminology for glacial stages in North America still in use with only minor modification. With Forest Ray Moulton he co-developed the Chamberlin-Moulton planetesimal hypothesis of 1905, an early challenge to the Laplacian nebular hypothesis of solar system formation, and his 1890 essay on the method of multiple working hypotheses became a landmark statement of scientific method; he also published early research, in 1899, on how changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration could affect climate.
