Susan Solomon is an American atmospheric chemist, born in 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. She and her colleagues were the first to propose the chlorofluorocarbon free radical reaction mechanism responsible for the Antarctic ozone hole, and she led expeditions to Antarctica in 1986 and 1987 that gathered ground based evidence confirming the mechanism and measuring chlorine oxide levels far higher than expected. Her research helped lay the scientific foundation for the Montreal Protocol, the international agreement regulating ozone depleting chemicals.
