Vice-Admiral Robert FitzRoy was an English officer of the Royal Navy, politician and scientist who commanded HMS Beagle on its survey expedition to Tierra del Fuego and the Southern Cone, the voyage that carried Charles Darwin around the world. He was a pioneering meteorologist who made accurate daily weather predictions, coining the term forecast for them, and in 1854 he established what would later become the Meteorological Office, building systems to get weather information to sailors and fishermen for their safety. He was also an accomplished surveyor and hydrographer, and served as the second governor of New Zealand from 1843 to 1845.
