Dutch geologist (1904-1983) best known for his comprehensive study of the geology of the Dutch East Indies, published as The Geology of Indonesia in 1949, and for his Undation Theory, an early attempt to explain mountain building and large-scale crustal deformation through rising and sinking waves in the Earth's crust. He earned his doctorate at Delft in 1927, became professor of geology at Utrecht University in 1950, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1977.
