Paul R. Renne is an American geologist, born in 1957 in San Antonio, Texas, who directs the Berkeley Geochronology Center and holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Earth and Planetary Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a leading practitioner of the argon-argon dating technique, a refinement of potassium-argon dating that measures the ratio of argon isotopes released by a sample under irradiation to determine its age with high precision. His research has focused on precisely dating the Siberian Traps flood basalts and their relationship to the end-Permian mass extinction, and he has also applied argon-argon dating to volcanic ash layers bracketing early human fossil sites in East Africa.
