Norman A. Phillips was an American meteorologist specializing in geophysical fluid dynamics, born in 1923 in Chicago and died in 2019 in Windham, New Hampshire. In 1956 he developed a mathematical model realistically depicting monthly and seasonal patterns in the troposphere, producing what is considered the first successful general circulation model of climate. His paper on this work, The General Circulation of the Atmosphere: A Numerical Experiment, received the inaugural Napier Shaw Memorial Prize from the Royal Meteorological Society.
