Michael Evan Mann is an American climatologist and geophysicist, born in 1965 in Amherst, Massachusetts, who is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He has contributed to the scientific understanding of historic climate change based on the temperature record of the past thousand years, pioneering statistical techniques for finding patterns in past climate change and isolating climate signals from noisy proxy data, work that produced the widely known hockey stick graph of global temperature and made him a lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Assessment Report.
