Marshall Kay was a geologist and professor at Columbia University, born in 1904 in Paisley, Ontario, and died in 1975. He is best known for his studies of Ordovician period rocks in New York, Newfoundland and Nevada, though his research extended globally, and he published widely on the stratigraphy of the middle and upper Ordovician. His 1951 publication North American Geosynclines developed the geosyncline concept describing large elongated basins of sediment accumulation along continental margins.
