British geomorphologist (1920-1994) who specialized in the study of karst, the distinctive landscape formed by the dissolution of limestone. She carried out fieldwork on karst terrain in Greece, Australia, China and the United States, and her books Karst Landforms (1972) and Karst in China: its Geomorphology and Environment (1995), described as the first comprehensive Western account of Chinese karst, remain standard references in the field.
