Luke Howard was a British manufacturing chemist and amateur meteorologist with broad interests in science. His lasting contribution to science is the nomenclature system for clouds that he proposed in an 1802 presentation to the Askesian Society, work for which he is remembered as the namer of the clouds and, to some, the father of meteorology.
