Kiyoo Wadati was a Japanese seismologist, born in 1902 in Nagoya and died in 1995 in Tokyo, who worked at the Central Meteorological Observatory of Japan, now the Japan Meteorological Agency, researching deep subduction zone earthquakes. His name is attached to the Wadati-Benioff zone, the dipping planar region of earthquakes associated with a subducting tectonic plate, and his 1928 paper comparing earthquake displacement against distance from the epicenter directly led Charles Richter to develop his earthquake magnitude scale in 1935.
