British geologist and mineralogist (1910-2001) regarded as one of the leading figures in his field in twentieth-century Britain. He was professor of geology at Durham University from 1950 to 1971 and director of the British Geological Survey from 1967 to 1975, supervised the Rookhope borehole project that discovered a concealed granite beneath the northern Pennines, and published extensively on the Northern Pennine Orefield. He was knighted in 1972 and received the Royal Medal in 1970 and the Wollaston Medal in 1976.
