Catherine Josephine Katia Krafft was a French volcanologist and filmmaker who, together with her husband Maurice Krafft, died in a pyroclastic flow on Mount Unzen in Japan on 3 June 1991. The Kraffts became well known as pioneers in filming, photographing and recording volcanoes, often working within feet of active lava flows, and their work has since been the subject of documentary films including Werner Herzog's Into the Inferno and The Fire Within, and Fire of Love, which drew on their own archived footage.
