Jule Gregory Charney

Jule Gregory Charney was an American meteorologist, born in 1917 in San Francisco and died in 1981 in Boston. He played a central role in developing numerical weather prediction and in deepening understanding of the general circulation of the atmosphere, building an increasingly sophisticated series of mathematical models of the atmosphere that drove major national and international weather research programs. He is considered the father of modern dynamical meteorology, and his close collaboration with Edward Lorenz connected his own work on predictability to Lorenz's founding of chaos theory.
