John Frederick Dewey

British structural geologist (born 1937), a leading figure in applying plate tectonics to the study of mountain building, with influential work on the Appalachian and Caledonian mountain belts of eastern North America, Newfoundland, Scotland and Ireland. He has held professorships at Cambridge, Durham, Oxford and the University of California, Davis, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1985, and received both the Wollaston Medal (1999) and the Penrose Medal (1992), the top honors of the British and American geological societies respectively.
