James Croll was a Scottish scientist, born in 1821 in Perthshire and died in 1890 in Perth, who developed an early theory of climate variability grounded in changes in the shape and orientation of the Earth's orbit. His astronomically based account linked variations in the Earth's orbital geometry to the timing of ice ages, an approach that anticipated the twentieth century orbital theory of climate change later refined by Milutin Milankovic.
