J. S. Lee

Li Siguang, known in the West as J. S. Lee, was a Chinese geologist, born in 1889 and died in 1971, considered the founder of geomechanics in China. After studying in Japan and at the University of Birmingham in England, he became a geology professor at Peking University in 1920, and his research established the taxonomy of fusulinid fossils, discovered evidence of Quaternary glaciation in China, and founded the discipline of geomechanics, which analyzes the stress patterns recorded in rock structures. His geomechanical approach to petroleum geology was later credited with guiding the exploration that made China a major oil producer.
