Harry Fielding Reid was an American geophysicist, born in 1859 in Baltimore and died in 1944 in the same city. He made notable contributions to glaciology and seismology, and he is best known for his theory of elastic rebound, which explained how the sudden release of stored strain along a geological fault produces an earthquake. He taught as a professor of dynamical geology and geography at Johns Hopkins University.
